  1. Uum… Hi! I don’t know what to write! Oh!! I have a question…how can i help my friend who is taking social studies exit level taks…but she only has the last 6 weeks in us history class…and she only have1year in U.S!!???? Help!!!! Haha!!! Thanks Mr. Darrel!! X3!!

  2. 1. Have your friend ask her teacher for the publication Mastering the Grade 11 TAKS Social Studies Assessment (send your friend to me if her teacher doesn’t have it).

    2. Tell your friend to go to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) website and take the practice, on-line social studies TAKS.

    3. Tell your friend it might be a good idea to pick up the Barron’s Guide to Texas Exit Level TAKS (or whatever they call that publication) for about $20.00, and read it.

Take all the practice exams you can. Do it now, so you can fix problems before the exam.

  3. mr.darrell this website is pretty cool… ill be back on it a lot… i will surly help with knowing more about what we are talking about in class..

  4. Mr. Darell i think they did go to the moon it was a ” step for man kind” come on you can’t arguee with that.

  5. Hi!! Mr.Darrel i want to know why in can’t write HEIL HITLER! I HATE THE FUHRER!!! ????

  6. We discussed this briefly Friday afternoon. As I understand it, another teacher asked that you not make such a statement.

The most obvious reason is that it’s rather offensive, especially when not analyzed. “Heil Hitler” was the equivalent of our “Hail to the Chief” plus the “Pledge of Allegiance” plus oath to military or civil service, to Adolf Hitler, one of history’s truly bad guys. It’s a “hello” used today by NeoNazis, Aryan Nation and white supremacist groups around the world — more bad guys.

The teacher is probably asking that you not be offensive.

Adding “I hate the Fuhrer” makes the statement ironic, if “Fuhrer” refers to Hitler. Most people would assume it does. However, in German, “fuhrer” means simply “leader.” To whom does the phrase refer? Hitler? Obama? Principal Gomez? A lack of clarity may increase the chances that the hail would be misinterpreted. You and I did not discuss what you meant by the phrase.

You asked about free speech rights. Students have limited free speech rights, as indeed we all do. Employers may insist that their employees avoid any political speech, not only speech favoring a position or candidate, but even speech that even-handedly discusses an issue.

Students have free speech rights in a public forum. Classrooms are not public fora. Generally, neither are hallways or other parts of a high school campus.

So students may be asked to rein in speech, even without explanation.

Now I have a question for you: What was your intent with the hail to Hitler? Why do you think it should be protected speech?

When I get some more time, I may post some links to first amendment explanations for you here . . .

Well, here, from the U of Missouri-Kansas City Law School.

And here, a longer explanation from the ACLU, which you should note suggests that I err in saying you lose some free speech rights. Why do I say that, when the ACLU disagrees?

  16. ummm….. ok now for my smart comment! well Mr. Darrell, today was awwsum how we got to watch looney toons! you should play alot more videos like that! they help alot…

    • Looney Tunes? No, Merrie Melodies! Don’t confuse the two!

(How can we keep them separate?)

Not just any cartoon, though — a young Porky Pig learning U.S. history directly from Uncle Sam. Tough to get more authoritative than that!

Porky and Sam did better — or at least, they were more accurate — than Bugs Bunny and Christopher Columbus. Another cartoon for another day.

  17. Noe Vargas said hi!!!

  18. okkk, this is my fourth cooment… do I get 4 100’s?

    • You’ll get better scores if you drop by here more often and discuss what we cover in class, and especially what we read that we don’t get to in class.

  20. Yes, I do love your confidence, and I’m pretty sure it’s not misplaced in your case, Alex!

Good luck. Do a good review. Have fun tomorrow. I smell a 2700 or so — you think that’s fair?

  21. HMMM… WELL HISTORY TAKS WAS PRETTY EASY. . .

  22. … i dont know what to put… bad day =(

  23. Write down that it was a bad day. I regret yours didn’t go well (hey, we’re close to summmer — bad days are relative, aren’t they? Maybe not).

Bad day? I think of Lyndon Johnson. On August 4, 1964, he got the news from the FBI that they’d found the bodies of three young men murdered in Mississippi for trying to get African Americans to register to vote, casting a pall on his election campaign and efforts to secure civil rights, even after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 earlier in the year. Big crisis.

But earlier in the day he’d been awakened by news from the Tonkin Gulf where, the reports said, two U.S. Navy ships had been attacked by North Vietnam gunboats. Big crisis.

One crisis foreign, that would lead to the end of his presidency, one crisis domestic, which demonstrated the need for an ambitious domestic social program. Either one could have driven normal people mad. Johnson had to deal with them both, at the same time.

My bad days are never that bad.

What do you think about this little point of history?
